When it comes to the possibility of a train derailment Chief Wheeler said, "You have no idea what cars are empty or full, and if they are full, you don't know what they're carrying."

His advice to families who live near the tracks, is to be prepared to either evacuate or stay indoors for an extended period of time.

He also suggest families have a "family plan" in place that includes a meeting place, an out-of-town contact person, escape routes.

Other than that he says they should fight all instincts and literally run from a derailment. He says there are no other special emergency preparation requirements for these individuals.

Acting Fire Chief Jim Wheeler said Monday the cause of the fire is thought to be accidental or due to carelessness, but he would not comment on the exact cause.

"The fire started on the outside and because it was an old wooden structure, the fire went up the outside and into the roof area. The apartment where the fire started received basically no fire or smoke, but water damage."

However, Acting Chief Wheeler said the building sustained "extensive" damage and will not be livable for sometime.

During their investigation, firefighters discovered two apartments did not have a working smoke alarm.

"Two of the apartments upstairs had the detectors removed that were not working."

Acting Chief Wheeler said the apartment downstairs, near where the fire originated, did have a working smoke alarm.

"If you remove a smoke detector because of cooking purposes or whatever you're putting your life in jeopardy and that's what really happened here."

Acting Chief Wheeler said the occupants of the two apartments without working alarms will be fined under the Ontario Fire Code.
