    A dedicated educator and scientist , Fred began his professional career as an agricultural teacher in the secondary schools of North Carolina.After teaching two years , he became the Dean of the Poultry Department , Princess Anne College , University of Maryland , Eastern Shore , Princess Anne , Md. The following year he accepted a position as Assistant Director of Race Relations with Triumph Explosives , in Elkton , Md. Realizing his great interest in research , Fred returned to the University of Connecticut as Research Assistant , after having served two years as Head of the Poultry Department of Avon Training School , Avon , Conn. For 12 years , Fred worked as Assistant Director of Nutrition Research , Dawes Laboratories Inc. , in Chicago.It was during this period that Fred began publishing some of his research.Following his lengthy appointment at Dawes Laboratories , Fred was appointed as United States Advisor in Animal Nutrition , in Ghana , West Africa , where he resided for four years.During that time , he set up what would be an ongoing research operation with a long-range research program capability.Fred returned to the United States to become Senior Project Manager for Monsanto Chemical Company , in St. Louis.During his 13 years with the company , he held two other positions.As Development Manager , New Enterprise Division , the first plastic beverage bottle was developed under his leadership.He later held the position of Manager Environmental Affairs Cycle Safe Division , Monsanto Commercial Products , Commercial Products Company.Fred left the company and finally retired from Continental Group Inc. , in Stamford , Conn. , after serving as Director of Public Affairs , in the Plastic Beverage Bottle Division , Continental Diversified Industries and Continental Packing Company.A few highlights of Fred's career include evaluating technology and personnel and participating in negotiations in acquisition of a company in England , negotiating joint applications in research and site agreement with a pharmaceutical company in France , directing program resulting in legal sanction to market plastic beverage containers in the USA , England , France , Denmark , the Netherlands , and Sweden , and testifying before the Congressional Legislation affecting beverage containers.He was also a participant in one of the White House Conferences on Food , Nutrition and Health , where he addressed the issue of food distribution and retailing.A prolific researcher and writer , Fred was awarded several patents.He authored and co-authored over 45 published technical and scientific papers , some of which have been translated in seven or more different languages.His most cherished-authored book was Proceedings of the Symposium : Environmental Impact of Nitrate Barrier Containers , Lopac , a Case Study.Fred has presented more than 30 reports at scientific and international meetings.A few of the scientific societies in which Fred held membership were the Society of Sigma Xi , the American Institute of Nutrition and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.Dedicated to civic and social needs , Fred actively served in a variety of capacities.These included Committee for Environmental Information , St. Louis Committee on Africa , Grace Hill Settlement House , Lakeside Center for Boys of Saint Louis County , Mark Twain Summer Institute , University City Home Rental Trust , Project 70 University City , St. Louis Council on World Affairs and Hogan Street Regional Youth Center.He was also contributing editor to Environmental Magazine and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.Upon retirement , Fred continued his commitment to civic and community service.He was chairperson of the Housing Partnership for the City of Norwalk , Management Consultant Executive Service Corp. , Executive Recruiter for International Executive Corp , and a member of the Executive Committee of the Norwalk Chapter of the NAACP.Fred is listed in Who's Who , in the Mid-West , in 1975 , Community Leaders and Noteworthy American , in 1977 , Who's Who in Black America , in 1976 , 1980 , and 1981 , and American Men of Science , current.At an early age , Fred became a devout Episcopalian , and came to serve the church in many capacities.Leadership roles included serving as Junior Warden , Senior Warden , Lector , Sacristan , Epistoller , Master of Ceremonies , Vestry , and a representative for the Parish.Fred married Millicent Lewis , of Newark , Del. , while working in Elkton , Md. They had one son , and shortly thereafter Millie Millicent succumbed to complications secondary to Sickle Cell Anemia.

    Fred enjoyed life and was unusually active into his later years.Aside form being an avid reader , he enjoyed plays and opera , tennis and racquet ball.Fred truly appreciated family and was radiant when in the midst of his sons , sisters , nephews and nieces.He will be remembered as a dynamic speaker , a prolific writer , a knowledgeable mentor and educator , and a much loved family member and friend.With his numerous gifts , he served human kind in many ways.He truly will be missed.
