Dart "EastRise" Westphal - Bronx Council for Environmental Quality, Bronx River
Dart Westphal has volunteered in parks for over 22 years.He has worked with many organizations including the South Bronx Open Space Task Force, the Bronx Greenway Committee, and the Bronx River Restoration Team.His mission is to help communities along the Bronx River gain access to the waterway and to promote and organize restoration projects along the River.In 1987, he began working with students from Middle School 80 and Dewitt Clinton High School to plant tulips along Mosholu Parkway.During the same period, Dart gave bus and boat tours of the Bronx with Bronx Council for Environmental Quality.Dart was a member of the Bronx Greenway Committee that held the first annual Bronx Parks Speak-Up.He is a former president of the Bronx Council of Environmental Quality, and a member of the Boards of the Friends of Van Cortland Park and the Harlem River Valley Development Corporation.Most recently, Dart has been involved in the Golden Ball event on the Bronx River, and has worked to bring more people onto the river on canoe trips.He is also involved in the restoration of the Bronx River Forest, planning a workshop and clean-up day in September to raise awareness of the forest.Dart's tireless energy and good humor inspire all those who work with him to continue their commitment to parks and open space in the Bronx.
