Health News Florida reports that nephrologist Ankush Gulati of Fort Myers was fined $5,000 and surgeon James Westervelt of St. Petersburg was fined $10,000 under agreements worked out by the Florida Department of Health and their lawyers.

A general surgeon, Westervelt is nationally recognized in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Dr. Westervelt comes to St. Petersburg from Surgical Associates Southern in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Westervelt is a graduate of Siena College, and received his M.D. from the State University of New York Syracuse with Honors in embryology, pediatric surgery and surgical nutrition. He served his internship at Tulane University Medical Center, his residency at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. and his fellowship at the University of Louisville.
