It is also the smallest of all the schools selected, and the smallest ever to go to the festival, Drama Director Tracey Wesley said.

"You have to be nominated for the festival, which we were by a professor from Bennington College, and then go through an elaborate process to be selected," she said.

The cast from Long Trail will be performing "The Insanity of Mary Girard" by Lanie Robertson in Edinburgh as part of the 2005 Festival Fringe.

Established more than 50 years ago, the festival is aimed at encouraging young actors and relatively unknown theater companies to experiment with creative forms of theatrical expression, according to the festival's Web site.

The play is based on a true story of the wife of a Philadelphia philanthropist and America's first millionaire, who was confined to an insane asylum by her husband in the 1790s.

Wesley chose the play, in part, because it is a dark and moody drama that fit the theater in Scotland where they will be performing. She made a scouting trip there to get a firsthand sense of what the venue was like, and the spooky feeling of "The Insanity of Mary Girard" seemed a good match, Wesley said.
    ...
They will be spending two days in London for general sightseeing, but then will be going north in private buses, Wesley said.

They will perform the show four times while they are there, she said.

The group will be giving a special free performance of "The Insanity of Mary Girard" tonight at the school's Riley Levin Theater, beginning at 7 p.m., she said.

About one hour in length, the subject matter is for mature audiences only, she said.

"It's not for young children," Wesley said."It's very intense and scary."
