Murray Wells (Urenui)Murray became a member of the Urenui Fire Brigade in 1961, completing 35 years' service until he retired in 1996.He held the rank of deputy fire chief from 1976 to 1992, and became chief fire officer in 1993 to 1996.He is still an active life member of the brigade, and has been awarded the Gold Star Medal for 25 years' service.
Murray joined the Urenui Boat Club in 1965.He was elected to the executive committee in 1978 and became secretary/treasurer in 1997 - an office he still holds.He helped organise concrete for the west boat ramp, the completion of the recreational centre in the camp ground and helped with the promotion of the Urenui seawall.Murray also served for 40 years as a Pukearuhe Hall committee member and as a member of the Mimi School committee.
He was appointed a marine adviser of the Taranaki Marine Search and Rescue in 1964.His knowledge of the coast and sea conditions, particularly from Mokau to Waitara, is extensive and he has contributed enormously in advice and expertise in marine SAR incidents.
