Cowell's approach was based on the work of Dr. Morgan Wells, the former Director of NOAA.Well's idea was to inject the oxygen into the air intake of a compressor.By trial and error, Dr. Wells ended up using a corrugated pool hose attached to the compressor intake to mix the oxygen and air before it was drawn into the compressor. The problem he found was that to get a complete mix he had to have so many loops of hose that the intake flow was restricted, which caused damage to the compressor. If he removed some of the hose coils to enhance the intake flow, the mix was not complete, allowing slugs of oxygen into the compressor, which was also a potential problem.
