  Mike Wells is in his first year as the Orchestra Director at Kempner High School in Fort Bend ISD in Sugar Land.He directs both the Symphony Orchestra as well as the three String Orchestras.Prior to moving to Kempner, he spent six years as the Orchestra Director at Katy High School.Under his direction, the Katy High School orchestra program enjoyed the most successful time in its history.His orchestras were consistent first division winners at UIL contests.In 1999, Katy High School became the first Katy Independent School District school ever to receive the coveted "Sweepstakes" ratings at University Interscholastic League Competition for both full orchestra and string orchestra in the same year.The KHS Symphony also performed at Carnegie Hall in New York on June 10, 2000.KHS orchestras performed four times at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands for Houston Symphony Orchestra events.They also were awarded numerous "Outstanding Orchestra in Class" and "Outstanding Overall Orchestra" Awards at spring festivals throughout Texas.
  
  Before becoming an orchestra director in Katy, Mr. Wells was a band director for eleven years.He served as Director of Bands at Johnston High School in Austin, Texas, and at Marion High School in Marion, Texas.While at Johnston High School, his Symphonic Band received the first UIL "Sweepstakes Award" in the history of the school's band program.He has also has served as Assistant Band Director at Fox Tech High School in San Antonio, and at Eastwood High School in El Paso.Mr. Wells received his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music Conducting degrees at Texas Tech University, where he studied with Mr. James Sudduth, former Director of Bands at Tech.He also served as Graduate Teaching Assistant Conductor for Mr. Sudduth.He has been a performing member of the Amarillo (Tx.), Lubbock (Tx.), Roswell (N.M.), and El Paso (Tx.) Symphony Orchestras.He is in continuing demand as both a clinician and adjudicator of orchestras in Texas.He has professional affiliations with Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Orchestra Directors Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Professional Music Fraternity.
  
  Mr. Wells will conduct the Kempner High School Orchestras in their first concert of this school year on the 23 September 2004 at 7 pm in the KHS Auditorium.

  Mike Wells is in his fifth year as Orchestra Director at Katy High School.For 11 years, he was a high school band director in Texas, most recently for five years at A.S. Johnston High School in Austin.He has performed with symphony orchestras in Amarillo, Lubbock, Roswell, N. M., and El Paso.Mr. Wells has also taught for the music department of Texas Tech University, and currently teaches at the Tech Band and Orchestra Camp as an orchestra instructor.He recently served as Region 23 Orchestra Chairman for the Texas Music Educators Association.Ensembles under his direction have won consistent awards and have competed statewide.Under his direction, the Katy High School Symphony Orchestra accepted an invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York on June 10, 2000.His orchestras have been invited numerous times to perform at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for Houston Symphony events and other functions.He is also listed in the 1996 edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers.Mr. Wells holds a Masters Degree in Conducting and a Bachelors of Music Education Degree from Texas Tech University.He is a frequent judge and clinician across the state as well as instructor at several summer music camps.
