Mr. Wells was twice married, first to the late Mary Rayle Wells and later to Evelyn Avin Wells.

Mr. Wells was a charter member of Alice Drive Baptist Church and later rejoined First Baptist Church.He graduated from Clemson University in 1940 and received a Master's degree from the University of South Carolina in 1952.He was a Lt.Colonel in the U.S. Army and served in World War II and retired from the United States Army Reserves after 20 years of service.He was the Business Manager and Deputy Superintendent of Sumter School District #17 having retired in 1978.He was a member of the Road's End Club, past President and former member of the Sumter Rotary Club, charter member of the Cooper River Fishing Club, member of the Millwood Club, member of the American Legion Post #15, former President of the S.C. Airstream Association and was active in many civic organizations.
