    Welker to join Mill Ridge Farm

    Bayne Welker Jr. is scheduled to join the management team at Mill Ridge Farm on a full-time basis after the 2001 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale.

    Welker, who has served as a racing official at Keeneland, Turfway Park, Arlington International Racecourse, and other racetracks, is currently the farm manager of Locust Ridge Farm and is a partner with Welker Sales Agency.

    At Mill Ridge, Welker will handle stallion marketing and oversee the farm's sales consignments in a position previously held by Tom Biederman, who left to pursue other business interests.

    Bayne Welker will join Fasig-Tipton's management team as an account executive at the beginning of next year. He has been the director of public sales and stallion marketing at Mill Ridge Farm near Lexington for nine years. He also is the president of the Consignors and Commercial Breeders Association.

    "It has been a privilege to have been associated with an outstanding operation like Mill Ridge," Welker said. "I leave with a tremendous respect for Alice Chandler and the Mill Ridge staff and clientele. With Headley Bell's leadership, the farm will continue to produce top-class Thoroughbreds under the philosophy Mrs. Chandler has instilled. Although it was difficult to leave Mill Ridge, I look forward to the new challenges and opportunities at Fasig-Tipton."

    According to Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning, Welker's "hands-on experience and focus on auction sales, combined with his history of industry service, are qualities which will fit him perfectly at Fasig-Tipton."

    While the CBA's purpose isn't to serve as a police force for sales, the organization wants its code of ethics to do more than pay lip service to auction business issues, according to Welker.But he declined to discuss what possible actions the organization would take if one of its members would behave inappropriately.
