Don Welch Visits Krystal Test Kitchen: Part 1

Don Welch of News Channel 9 in Krystal's hometown of Chattanooga recently paid a visit to the KrystalTest Kitchen. Welch is the host of the station's popular program This N That, and as part of a two-day series, he joined BradWahl, the vice president of marketing for Krystal, to taste a couple of new items that are currently being tested in various markets. During the visit, Welch and Wahl (sounds like the name of a weird '70s sitcom) sink their teeth into a Krystal-sized patty melt, which is made with Black Angus chuck, and try out a newhot and spicy Scrambler that has yet to be named.
    ...
We'll post the second half tomorrow where Welch and Wahl (ha) taste the most popular Krystal Freeze flavors and reveal the new line of MilkQuakes for the summer.

New This Week: In My Sister's House by Donald Welch
    ...
This is actor/singer/playwright Donald Welch's second novel. The first, 2008's The Bachlorette Party, was based on one of Welch's more successful plays. The trouble with Welch's novels are not with the books themselves. One very much gets the feeling that this talented writer is telling the stories that move him. The trouble is with a marketing department that seems a little unsure of how this clear-eyed, sharp-voiced writer should be shared with the world. One can't help but think that some of the decisions that have been made in that regard will keep Welch from the part of his potential audience that would appreciate him most deeply... and never mind the existing fans that likely feel the need to keep this book covered if they read on the bus.

Meanwhile, Welch's fans in the Los Angeles area will want to take note that the hit gospel musical stage play Hallelujah Mahalia!, written and directed by Welch, opens at the the Wilshire Ebell Theatre on February 27th.

Donald Welch really is, so we figure why not just let him tell us in his own words. As the Philadelphia native ties up some loose ends in L.A., where he currently lives, before hopping a flight to Memphis, TN for a show the next day, he talks to me about his upcoming work, his family and how his life is changing for the better.
    ...
    They say, Don B. Welch.
    ...
As Don Welch, I probably wouldn't have said it, because it might hurt someone's feelings, but I can say it through a character.

That's another thing too-I'm brutally, brutally honest.

Got a phone call last night from Don Welch, long-time local television personality with the ABC affiliate. He wants me to do an interview next Monday for their mid-day show, which is sure to be an absolute hoot.

[:: Insert Wayne's World wobbledy weedley-woot time shift here ::]

Many years ago, back when I was a wee teenager who was new to the Tennessee Valley, some of my friendly idiot friends used to make a hobby of pestering Don.Mind you, Don is a perfectly nice man, bearing a faint but reassuring resemblance to Santa Claus; and there was no good reason whatsoever for the pestering which took place.

Generally speaking, it went as follows: Don was a morning host who sometimes took his show on the road - he'd show up at a Hardee's, or a Waffle House, or a gas station, and just set up shop for early a.m. television. My goofy friends would then hijack this location and trying to sneak onto camera - purely for the joy of making silly faces and yelling, with a drawn-out set of vowels, "FREEEAAAAAAKKKKK!"

Sometimes this was augmented to "Don is a FREEEEEAAAAKKK!"or "Let's hear it for the FREEEAAAAKKKKKSS!"If they were to spot Don in a crowd, it was the same thing."FREEEEAAAAAKKKK!"
    ...
I'm sure Don was deeply relieved.

    Anyway.
