,Renaissance Man, is how a newspaper journalist described the talents of Donald Welch.He is an accomplished singer, actor, writer, director, and producer.Hailing from Philadelphia, PA, Welch began his professional career as a singer at age 15.Throughout the 80's and 90's, his successful nightclub act has been performed in Los Angeles, New York, Atlantic City, Washington D.C., Las Vegas, and of course, Philadelphia.As an actor, his television credits include co-starring roles on ,The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," ,Cosby," and as a celebrity guest on ,The Sally Jessy Raphael Show,, ,Philly After Midnight,, ,City Lights,, and ,Steppin Out., He also served as a celebrity judge for ,The Miss America Pageant, in 2000 and 2004 for ABC television, co-judging with Judge Judy, Greta Van Susteran, and Tia Carrera, among others.In 2000, he co-starred in his first independent film called ,Façade.,
As a playwright, he has written and directed over 14 productions including: ,Hallelujah Mahalia, (The hit stage play on the life of gospel great Mahalia Jackson), ,Caterpillar On A Hot Rock, (The Dorothy Dandridge Story) and the stirring family drama ,A Change Is Gonna Come., Noted singers and actors such as Marla Gibbs, Freda Payne, Dawnn Lewis, Dorien Wilson, Lynn Hamilton, Mary Wilson, and the late great TV comedienne LaWanda Page (Aunt Esther) have all appeared in a Welch production.In addition, Welch has worked as a writer for superstar friend and fellow Philadelphian, Will Smith.
In the year 2000, Welch, at the urging of Smith, decided to relocate to Los Angeles to pursue further endeavors in the entertainment industry.Smith immediately lent a helping hand by setting up various meetings with industry moguls and introducing Welch to the day-to-day mechanics of television.Since then, he has written two television pilots, ,Welcome to Idella,s,, and ,The Last Bachelor., Through his company, Don B. Welch Productions, he will direct his first independent feature film, ,The Bachelor,s Last Call,, which is based on his hit stage play, ,The Bachelor Party, in 2006.
What,s next for Welch?His debut CD entitled ,Donald Welch, All Things In Time,, a mixture of R&B, pop and soul ballads, will be released on the Philly Through My Ear record label, owned and operated by Will Smith, Sr. and in the world premiere of the stage play ,The Bachelorette Party, opening in 2006. His awards include: Big Brother of the Year, African-American Legends Hall of Fame Award, and the NAACP theatre award nominations for the stage play ,A Change Is Gonna Come.,
