Joining the gala were Cardinal John P. Foley, grand master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, Cardinal Edward M. Egan of New York, Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Quebec and Bishop James Weisgerber of Winnipeg, Manitoba, who is president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. Cardinal Foley, billed as the convention's second keynote speaker of the day, urged the convention to continue praying and supporting the work of Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal of Jerusalem. He reminded the gathering of the difficulty the Catholic Church faces in the Holy Land as the Christian presence continues to dwindle. Patriarch Twal was in attendance at the convention and earlier in the day he had made his own appeal to the 500 delegates for their support of the church in the Holy Land.

In a March 23 letter, James Weisgerber, archbishop of Winnipeg and the current president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, said that the accusations against D&P were “untrue.†Also on March 23, Archbishop Daniel Bohan of Regina, called the reports both “false†and “malicious.†But the evidence LifeSite compiled was compelling enough to provoke an extraordinary May 28, 2009 letter from the bishops of Peru to the Canadian bishops, formally requesting the Canadian bishops to cease funding groups in Peru which support contraception/abortion:

"It is basic Catholic teaching that the life and dignity of each human person must be respected and protected without exception," wrote CCCB president James Weisgerber, the Archbishop of Winnipeg, on behalf of the country's 85 bishops, archbishops and cardinals.

Quoting Catholic doctrine, Weisgerber argued "civil authorities should limit themselves to non-lethal means to defend and protect people's safety from an aggressor, 'as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity with the dignity of the human person.' In December 2000, Sister Jane brought her story of sexual abuse and exclusion from her Order to James Weisgerber, the Archbishop of Winnipeg. He expressed concern about the direction the Homes for Growth movement had taken. He said had been concerned about PRH in Western Canada since his experiences with that movement as priest in Saskatchewan and as Bishop of Saskatoon. He listened to her respectfully and took her story seriously. He gave Jane financial support to make a trip to Ireland. But he said he had limited authority in Canon (Church) law to take action against Sister JW for sexual abuse or to curtail the activities of Homes for Growth. He may have reported the matter to the authorities in the Vatican responsible for independent Religious Orders, because the Vatican appointed a retired Superior of the Grey Nuns of Montreal to visit Winnipeg and investigate the story.
