Weisgerber, son of former mayor Denny Weisgerber, went to what is now Fire Station No. 2 and talked with the crew to learn more about the field.
    ...
So Weisgerber became one of 36 firefighters in Milpitas in 1974 (compared to 80 department employees today). The department was vastly different then, he said, with three stations, no emergency medical technicians and responsibilities that made most firefighters "Jacks of all trades."The greatest fire threat during his early years was the Ford Motor Co.Assembly Plant, which he said "always had fires."

Today, Weisgerber said Milpitas Fire Department is among the best in the country. The small town has grown to more than 65,000 people, with a variety of businesses, residential areas and hotels with which the department must be acquainted.Every engine that goes on a call now has a paramedic on board, and the trucks and equipment are state-of-the-art.Weisgerber said the department has vastly changed since he was hanging onto the back of an engine responding to a call.

"The department has come a long way and I've had the pleasure and privilege of being a part of it," he said, calling his time with the department "satisfying, fulfilling and accomplished."

Weisgerber worked eight years as a firefighter, until he was promoted to lieutenant, a rank that has since been eliminated. He said he was trained how to operate the fire engines after serving for a year, and there were no designated engineers. In 1984, Weisgerber became a captain, and was in charge of an engine company, as well as serving as an acting battalion chief. He was promoted to permanent battalion chief in 1988, and served in a newly created position, operations chief, in 1990.
    ...
Weisgerber served as acting fire chief from 1998 through August 1999, when departing former city manager Greg Larson appointed him fire chief.
    ...
Weisgerber said he's enjoyed the various challenges at every level.

"One of the more challenging aspects was the fire marshal job because it's not something I anticipated doing," Weisgerber said.
    ...
Weisgerber has a lot of plans during his first months of retirement.First, he has to successfully oversee the American Cancer Society's Milpitas Relay For Life charity walkathon, which he will chair this year. Then, he and wife Vickie will embark on a number of vacations, including to New York City and Mexico. He said he will visit Las Vegas when his twin children turn 21 this summer.

Most of all, though, Weisgerber said he just wants to take time to enjoy things he didn't have time for previously, including his hobby of sketching. He is also looking into working as a consultant, he said.

"If something came along that looked interesting, I might pursue it," he said.
    ...
Finalists will be interviewed this week, Weisgerber said.

Milpitas Battalion Chief Demetrius Kastros will assume the role of acting fire chief on Saturday, Weisgerber said.
    ...
Weisgerber said the past 30 years have been amazing in terms of advancement for Milpitas Fire Department.

"We went from this perceived stepchild of the fire service community to an integral component of the local and regional fire service community," he said.
