"Depending on the kind of meeting, [Maui has] the ability to inspire; it gets [attendees] away from their work and gives them the ability to relax and think outside the box," says Marsha Weinert, executive director of the Maui Visitors Bureau.

As with Hawaii in general, meetings on Maui tend to have good attendance, according to Weinert.

"It's a great destination for leisure travel, so attendees often bring their families and do pre or post trips," she adds.
    ...
Meanwhile, Maui is only a 45-minute ferry ride from Lanai, and groups staying in either destination often island-hop for a function on the other, Weinert says.
    ...
With only 280 rooms and limited meeting space, Molokai mostly caters to incentives, Weinert says.

In the room were Marsha Weinert, former head of the Maui Visitors Bureau and now the Governor's Tourism liaison, and Terryl Vencl, the head of the Maui Visitor Bureau. one month hence, both women would be speaking at the Wailea Marriott, addressing 200 members of the MVB and extolling 2006 as a "fantastic year."
    ...
Weinert would say: "Everyone is reaping the rewards."

It is important to note, however, that she would be making this comment to shareholders of the Maui visitor industry, not to, say, members of the Maui chapter of the Reinstated Kingdom of Hawaii.

For even as tourism had soared, something else had come up that took some of the air out of these celebratory gatherings.A recent statewide telephone survey had asked Island residents if they agreed with this statement: "This island is being run for tourists at the expense of the people."Some 62 percent agreed.

Weinert would refer to this as evidence of a "rising animosity" against tourism.
