Maury Weiner took a stand. He decided to not sign the Loyalty Oath as a prerequisite for working at the Post Office in New York.
...
Eventually, after a number of years, Maury moved out west and took a job with the Councilman from the 10th district of Los Angeles around 1965.Anyone who has ever worked with Maury over the years says the same thing: He was the brilliant organizational political genius who eventually made Tom Bradley Mayor of Los Angeles.I met Tom Bradley and Maury Weiner while I was on the staff of Senator Alan Cranston in 1969.

Maury brought me into that campaign and introduced me to Don Rothenberg, who eventually became a major player in the Berkeley Co-op.

As a result of the leadership of Maury Weiner, Bradley was starting to put doubt into the minds of many who said, "A Black will never be Mayor of Los Angeles."

By now, everyone involved understood the incredible organizational abilities of Mr. Weiner.Bee Lavery, who became Mayor Bradley's Chief of Protocol for 20 years noted that, "Maury Weiner as Chief of Staff and Deputy Mayor, formulated an administration that was so open and organized, that most of the original staff from 1973 stayed in the Mayor's office for 20 years."

According to long time Bradley adviser and the Mayor's Chief of Staff, Maury Weiner, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor had a, "warm relationship with Tom."However, some major changes had to be made in order to allow minorities a seat at the governing power structure of these same Unions. This was in addition to allowing Blacks, in particular, the opportunity to be able to do manual labor under a Union contract. This included Carpenters, Welders, Electricians and others who never had the opportunity of representation at a bargaining table. Thus, when they worked as independent contracting, they didn't have health care, a pension, or any other normal protection usually afforded to Union membership under the private sector.Maury told me recently that Executive Assistant Bill Elkins and Coordinator, Warren Hollier, were both involved in working with the Union leadership and members for many years prior to the Mayoral victory.
...
Deputy Mayor Weiner, also said that when LA County Labor Leader Bill Robertson took the helm, much more progress was made. Maury said, "Bill would listen to Tom's calm explanation of why certain changes needed to be made."
