With these words Mary Lou Weiner was ordained, and her diaconal role in our community was affirmed, by the Church, on October 4, 1991.
...
Mary Lou Weiner has done this work with excellence and faithfulness. Most recently, Mary Lou Weiner has provided nourishment to the hungry and homeless of this city.In her work at Community House and Baltes Café, Mary Lou was known to make what appeared to be just a few ingredients feed dozens. She has quite literally fed the multitudes by networking around town with churches, restaurants and various social agencies.Every day of the year, including Thanksgiving and Christmas, Deacon Mary Lou got up early to minister to Jesus' friends around Boise.Until her retirement, it was not uncommon to see Mary Lou dashing from one diaconal responsibility to another, whether feeding a meal to her friends at Community House or a sacramental meal to her friends at St. Michael's or perhaps taking care of a homebound parishioner. She has many friends!
Mary Lou has been responsible for helping St. Michael's parishioners to be generous in supporting our friends in the community as well; "Are we doing Twelve Baskets Full this year?"she would ask, referring to one of our food collection efforts, as though we had a choice! Her diaconal ministry has served as a bright beacon at St. Michael's, of our responsibility as the church, to be generous in all we do.Mary Lou's ministry is one of footsteps.By the way she lives her life and the places she walks, she shows others how to minister to Jesus' friends.Christian discipleship is measured in footsteps, meals and miles.
Soon Mary Lou, and her dashing and faithful husband Mort, will relocate to Montana to live near her mother. While her longtenure here will conclude, I do have a sense that life for the people in Deer Lodge, Montana, is about to change.
