PARK FALLS -- For her enduring commitment to Catholic education, former St. Anthony School principal, Beatrice Weiland, was awarded the Bishop Frederic Baraga Spirit of the Diocese Award at the diocesan Fall Institute on Oct. 10.
Weiland, who served as principal at St. Anthony for 12 years, said she was both honored and humbled to receive the award. "There are so many people within the Diocese of Superior worthy of receiving this award, I really felt like I was accepting the award on their behalf."
She added, "They were wonderful here at St. Anthony's. It's a really great school and I'll certainly miss the children and staff I worked with for so many years." Weiland is now the executive director of the Wisconsin Non-Public School Accrediting Association.
Sr. Genevieve Schillo, director of Christian formation for the diocese, presented the award. Schillo, a Sister of St. Joseph, said Weiland earned the award for her many years of service in the diocese.
"Bea is an unusually fine educator who served at St. Anthony of Padua School as teacher and principal for many years. ... She firmly and strongly encouraged youth of all ages to learn all they could about the world around them," Schillo said.
"She is also an excellent administrator and has given generously of her time as mentor for other principals. Bea is committed to sharing faith and she takes time to foster evangelization and catechesis," Schillo said.
Schillo added that in encouraging students, parents and teachers to learn about their legacy of faith, Weiland sometimes used Frederic Baraga, pioneer priest and bishop, as an exemplar in teaching the Catholic faith.

"This award if given in memory of the Most Rev. Frederic Baraga, illustrious pioneer priest and bishop (1797-1868), who served the Ojibwe people of the Great Lakes and those who lived among them with compassion, wisdom and diligent care for the good of all. His unselfish concern for others is a model for those who follow him in teaching and serving God's people."
Weiland, who holds a master's degree in school administration from Marion College in Fond du Lac and a bachelor of arts from Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee, says she will remain active within the parish and close to her former students.
"Many of the kids came trick or treating on Halloween and it was great seeing their faces," she said. -
