Since opening her store, THe Fabric Carr, in Las Altos, Calafornia, in 1980, Bobbie has specilised in teaching the art of fine sewing in her design studio; in intensive, themed Sew Weeks; in seminars throughout the United States; and on video in her Couture Techniques series of six titles.
Bobbie began teaching these techniques after discovering that her customers were interested in creating unique designs with the fine fabrics they found at her shop. Her work with museum pieces had enabled her to learn original techniques of high-fashion designers, and she incorporated these into her classes.Soon after, she expanded her store to include a sewing school, and she began to offer fine sewing tools and books, a service which has grown into a mail-oder catalog that is distributed internationally.
When she is not teaching in her own school, Bobbie may be heard lecturing in colleges and universities throughout the United States or presenting couture-sewing seminars in retail stores and to sewing guilds and Extension groups. She also has written articles for Sew News, Vougue Patterns magazine, the Singer Sewing Reference Library and Threads magazine.
Before starting her own business, Bobbie spent 15 years with the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, eventually rising to director of sales and marketing. But she also has an extensive background in fashion, sewing and retailing. She gained early experience as Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy's economics degree from the University of Rhode School.
