ZHONG-MIN WEI, Ph.D. Chief Scientific OfficerVice President of Research
Dr. Wei is responsible for all scientific and technical aspects of the EDEN BIOSCIENCE business, including manufacturing and research and development.Wei received his Ph.D. in molecular biology from the Department of Plant Pathology, Nanjing Agricultural University, China, and the Molecular Genetics Laboratory, Institute of Plant Physiology of the Chinese Academy of Science, Shanghai, in December 1987.After receiving his Ph.D., Wei became a member of the faculty in the Department of Plant Pathology, Nanjing Agricultural University, specializing in rice leaf blight disease.Subsequently, Wei was invited to Cornell University, where he served both as a researcher and as a visiting scientist.
While at Cornell, Wei and his colleagues discovered and characterized the first harpin protein and related genes. This work, published as a cover article in Science on July 3, 1992, was quickly recognized and described by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a major technological breakthrough. The lay press at the time, including The New York Times, also highlighted the discovery.
After the initial discovery, Wei and others continued to explore a variety of harpin proteins, harpin genes and related topics.During this period, Wei began experimenting with a new idea. The concept was elegantly simple: Would applying the harpin protein directly to plants encourage treated plants to protect themselves against various diseases without the need for traditional pesticides? The dramatic success of his experiments completely surprised him and others at Cornell. That work has led to the development of Messenger® and EDEN BIOSCIENCE's harpin Ea and Harpin-related technology.Wei is the inventor or co-inventor on more than 40 harpin and harpin-related patents or patent applications in the United States and more than 100 worldwide.
