Former ag teacher, hog producer and past president of the county, state and National Pork Producers Council, Mike Wehler says, The hog market is a disaster. It is low if not lower than during the depression, accounting for inflation. It is a pretty good sign the marketplace is not working for the pork industry..
Wehler also said, It could turn around pretty fast. He indicated the solution is in the hands of the consumer. The consumers are still paying the same prices they paid for pork six months ago when the producers market was 70 percent higher.Consumers ought to know that they have the ability to influence supermarket prices. If prices are too high compared to what farmers are receiving, they should ask why.Consumers like to see farmers doing well and they are going to have to play a larger role in seeing farmers get a better price for their products, particularly for fresh meats, poultry, dairy, fruits and vegetables.
