Nancy Wegge, New Traditions director for MAC, said the workshop is intended to help adults feel more comfortable with getting back to the classroom.
"For adults who need a new direction in life, the key to success is often career training," she said. "The goal of the Returning Learner's Workshop is to provide career information, enrollment assistance and preparation for the college experience."
Topics covered include balancing the demands of school, work and family; increasing students' self-confidence, and setting goals that help get students what they want in life. The workshop also provides information on career programs and "brush-up" courses. Registration for the free workshop is suggested by calling Wegge at (573) 518-2255.
Sources of money to pay for classes and childcare will be reviewed. Many adults, Wegge said, may not realize that financial assistance is available for adults who enroll in college classes either full-time or part-time.
"Adults who have not been in school for a while often feel uncertain about how to get started and how to compete with younger students in class," she said. "The Returning Learner's workshop emphasizes that many MAC students are adults over the age of 25."
She said many adults who return to school are single parents or are experiencing a transition in their lives. Wegge said most of them do well in college, especially those who get their questions answered and are prepared before enrolling. -
