On weekdays, Weese, 51, can be found tending to school buses and maintenance for Big Sandy schools, and even filling in on days when a substitute driver is needed.

After he is finished with the morning shift of his full-time job as transportation director, Weese heads over to the Big Sandy City Hall for his volunteer job as mayor. He receives no compensation for that work.

After spending time on city business, he's back at the school district when the afternoon buses start rolling to take the students home.Once the school day is over, Weese will head on over to finish his mayoral duties.

Weese said he's responsible for leading City Council meetings. He oversees the utility and police departments, and all city department heads report to him.

"Anything that can't be handled over the phone with the office personnel comes to me," he said.Weese added that he gets calls from residents on his home phone and cell phone at all hours.
    ...
Weese said he thinks it would benefit the city to have a full time, paid mayor, but does not see that happening. He said there's no money for a salary.

He said a lot of people have asked him why he ran for mayor.

"No one else was running, and I felt like it was important to invest the time for the position," Weese said.

He added that he had the support of very good city staff and Mayor Pro Tem Monica Dequir.

Weese and his wife, Karen, have been married for 31 years. They have four children, who all graduated from Big Sandy schools, and three grandchildren.

Weese said one of his goals for Big Sandy is to attract investors who want to build three bedroom houses or apartments.

"If we want to survive as a city we must start to attract new business and new housing," he said.Growth will bring a need for better infrastructure, Weese added.

"What I like most about being mayor, is the chance to interact more with the citizens of Big Sandy," he said.

Still, all bills and city employees have been paid and city services continue without interruption, Mayor Wayne Weese said Tuesday.

The money , $15,166.07 , was kept at Austin Bank. The IRS placed a levy on the account Nov. 20.

The next day, the money was removed by the IRS, Weese said.

"It is still under investigation as to why and how this happened," Weese said.He declined to provide additional details regarding what prompted the IRS to take the money.

The money was taken from the city's 2007-08 general fund.City officials would not immediately provide a copy of the budget, and Weese said he did not immediately know the budget's balance.

"This levy didn't put an undue burden on the city," Weese said in a statement.

At a council meeting Tuesday morning, Weese said city officials had discovered an account at First National Bank of Gilmer's Big Sandy branch containing around $2,400.

The funds were placed in the account a few years ago and were designated for the city's emergency siren.

Weese said that when he was elected mayor in May the account with the funds to pay for the siren could not be located, and the siren was purchased with money from an account containing general funds.

After the siren was purchased, officials located the missing account.

The City Council voted unanimously to give Weese, Mayor Pro Tem Monica DeCuir, the city secretary and the public works director access to the account.

Weese said the money will be withdrawn and repaid to the general fund. The account then will be closed.
