A former Assistant Secretary-General at the CPA Secretariat in London, Mr Palitha Weerasinghe, passed away at his home in Sri Lanka on 18 April after a long illness.

A popular figure at CPA conferences and other meetings from 1971 until 1984, Palitha also visited many CPA Branches and played a significant part in encouraging Branches to develop parliamentary practice and procedure seminars for their own Members. He worked diligently on, among other projects, a CPA essay competition for young people and a programme of raising the profile of the organization with Branches. In the last year of his time at the CPA Secretariat, Palitha served as Research Advisor to a CPA Working Party.

Born in Sri Lanka in 1924, Palitha graduated in law and had a distinguished legal career before becoming Clerk Assistant of the Senate of Ceylon (as Sri Lanka was then called) in 1964.He became its Clerk in 1970 just before the Senate was abolished, at which time he moved to the CPA in London.

Following his return to Sri Lanka, he served in an advisory capacity to Parliament and attended some of the events associated with the 1995 Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Colombo.
