   Tom Weegar, based in Minnesota, is a senior administrator who has worked in the community college system in both Canada and the United States since 1991.He currently serves as the provost of a community college.
   
   Under Tom's leadership, his community college recently embarked on a team-based, shared leadership, quality principled approach to organizational improvement.

   Due to his experiences with this unique model of college operations, Tom has a great deal of knowledge and experience with implementing shared leadership approaches to operating a college.Tom firmly believes that these approaches must always be based upon mutual respect and trust between administration, faculty, and support staff.As well, Tom has experience in change management and organizational change overall.
   
   As an expert in his area, Tom presented on the topic of Shared Leadership/Shared Governance before an international conference at the Chair Academy's Annual Conference in Los Angeles in February 2003.He also co-wrote an article entitled, Shared Governance: Bringing Community Colleges to the People which will be published in a future edition of the Community College Enterprise.
   
   Prior to moving to the United States, Tom worked as a senior administrator for Northern Lights College and Northwest Community College (both multi-campus colleges) in northern British Columbia, Canada. As well, Tom worked for a number of years with culturally relevant post-secondary education in First Nation (Native American) communities in British Columbia.
   
   Tom is an enthusiastic, engaging person who believes strongly in shared leadership within the community college experience.He lives by the Shakespearean motto:

   Mr. Tom Weegar, NIC's newly appointed Principal of the Port Alberni Campus, is glad to be home.Weegar is Canadian born with roots on Vancouver Island.He comes to NIC from his most recent position as Provost/Chief Academic Officer of Rainy River Community College in International Falls, Minnesota.However, having been raised in Courtenay, Weegar is very familiar with the communities of Vancouver Island and the unique issues that they face.
   
   Weegar has a B.A. in Psychology from UVic and a Masters of Environmental Studies from York University.He has a specialization in Native Studies with particular emphasis on Native community-based development and self-government.He has taught at UNBC and Northwest Community College and has held administrative positions at Northwest Community College and Northern Lights College.
   
   "I feel very fortunate to be working at NIC with such a great group of people", comments Weegar."The sense of team spirit at the campus is obvious and faculty and staff are very supportive of one another while remaining focused on helping students".
   
   Having recently purchased a home in Port Alberni, Weegar is anxious for his wife and son to join him as soon as public school is finished."My family is really looking forward to living in Port Alberni, we love the outdoors and the countryside that is not only beautiful but perfect for hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, and all the things we like to do", says Weegar.
   
   Weegar indicates one of his first tasks will be to share information with the community on a new program offering at the Port Alberni Campus - NIC's first year science program."I think this program will be well received by students", says Weegar."It means that students wanting to pursue a degree in sciences can do their full first year right here in Port Alberni.It is a great opportunity for students to save on tuition, get the extra support that faculty can offer in a college setting, and transfer into year two at a university having completed a recognized first year right here at NIC".
   
   Residents in Port will not have any difficulty recognizing Principal Tom Weegar he stands a full six foot seven inches tall and has a very warm and friendly handshake.He is already attending the Rotary Club and is looking forward to reacquainting himself with the many interests in Port Alberni.
