    Mr. Tom Weegar, NIC's newly appointed Principal of the Port Alberni Campus, is glad to be home.Weegar is Canadian born with roots on Vancouver Island.He comes to NIC from his most recent position as Provost/Chief Academic Officer of Rainy River Community College in International Falls, Minnesota.However, having been raised in Courtenay, Weegar is very familiar with the communities of Vancouver Island and the unique issues that they face.

    Weegar has a B.A. in Psychology from UVic and a Masters of Environmental Studies from York University.He has a specialization in Native Studies with particular emphasis on Native community-based development and self-government.He has taught at UNBC and Northwest Community College and has held administrative positions at Northwest Community College and Northern Lights College.

    "I feel very fortunate to be working at NIC with such a great group of people", comments Weegar."The sense of team spirit at the campus is obvious and faculty and staff are very supportive of one another while remaining focused on helping students".

    Weegar indicates one of his first tasks will be to share information with the community on a new program offering at the Port Alberni Campus - NIC's first year science program."I think this program will be well received by students", says Weegar."It means that students wanting to pursue a degree in sciences can do their full first year right here in Port Alberni.It is a great opportunity for students to save on tuition, get the extra support that faculty can offer in a college setting, and transfer into year two at a university having completed a recognized first year right here at NIC".
