SUMPTER TWP. - The township has been a Democratic stronghold for decades, but supervisor candidate Thomas Weedon is hoping to change that in Tuesday's election.
Weedon, a township resident for more than 50 years, was the choice of the Wayne County 15th Congressional District Republican Committee to run for supervisor.
Weedon said there are more Republicans in the township than officials realize, but since only Democrats have run for office in recent years, many Republicans don't bother to turn out to vote.
Weedon said he decided to run for the supervisor's post because he was "tired of the bickering" at township meetings and among township employees and elected officials.
"I'm confident I can do a better job than any other candidate," Weedon said.
He said he is knowledgeable and experienced in fields ranging from industry to running a church to improving academic achievement.
"Government is growing far more complicated," Weedon said.
"You need an individual with a proven achievement record to tackle some of these jobs. I've studied the law and grasp the workings of government. I want to implement modern business practices (in the way the township is run)."
Weedon said the current problems were caused by officials' failure to keep the people fully informed about what's going on.
"There should be no secrets, no hidden agendas," he said.
One of Weedon's campaign promises is to keep township residents better informed about their government. He would ask for input from residents via survey mailings, polls, special meetings and cable TV announcements, and possibly create a township newsletter and a dynamic Web site.
"I'd use multiple means to determine the desires and wants of the people," Weedon said. "If you don't have the people behind you, you're lost."
Weedon served in the armed forces from 1962 to 1966, graduated from college with an engineering degree in 1970 and earned a master's degree a few years later.
He also completed a seminary education and served 10 years as founding pastor of Victory Baptist Church of Belleville.
He has worked for 25 years as an automotive engineer for Ford, Chrysler and now Visteon, and is nearing retirement.
Weedon said he believes that upon retirement, he will have plenty of time to devote to governing the township.
"I have a vision for Sumpter Township," he said. -
