As a National Urban Fellow with the Greater Twin Cities United Way, Tamara Webb's principal focus is on the management, development, and implementation of public information campaigns for financial literacy and responsibility.
Prior to accepting the Fellowship, Ms. Webb served as Program Specialist in the Peace Corps' Office of Domestic Programs.
In this role, she was responsible for developing specialized events and materials designed to address the critical transition-related needs of recently returned Peace Corps Volunteers.
During her time at the Peace Corps, she also served on the executive committees for the Peace Corps 45th Anniversary Celebration and the Combined Federal Campaigns of 2005 and 2006.
Preceding her employment with the Peace Corps, she worked as a Research Analyst for the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that oversees AmeriCorps, Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), Senior Corps, Learn and Serve America, and other domestic service and volunteering programs.
As a member of the Corporation's Office of Research and Policy Development team, she monitored agency-wide compliance with federal policies, drafted program and department operation manuals, and designed surveys to assess the activities of various agency-supported domestic volunteer initiatives.
She was also affiliated with the Corporation during her service as a VISTA in 1995.
As a VISTA, she worked closely with a national dropout prevention agency, the U.S. Army JROTC, and Apple Computers, Inc., as she forged partnerships with universities, community-based organizations, and school districts in Sacramento, California.
For over 15 years, she has continuously increased her leadership involvement in educational outreach and civic engagement initiatives.
As Training Director for the Bonner Foundation, she worked with dozens of colleges to gather and share effective management practices for service-learning programs.
She has also worked directly with and on behalf of grantees of federally-funded TRIO programs in California, New Jersey, Maryland, and Washington, DC.
As mandated by Congress, two-thirds of students served through TRIO must come from families with incomes under $28,000, where neither parent graduated from college.
She is an alumna of the Volunteers of America TRIO Talent Search Program, where she has also served as an instructor, educational advisor, and Assistant Director.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University and a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology and Education from Columbia University's Teachers College.
At Cornell, she was named a Meining Family National Scholar and was selected to become a College Scholar, a designation that allowed her to develop a personalized academic curriculum and culminating project.
She has also received financial honors and scholarships from a variety of organizations, among which are the National Association of University Women, the Los Angeles Urban League, the Beverly Hills/Hollywood NAACP, and the Golden State Minority Foundation.
During her junior year at Cornell, she was fully funded to participate in a nine-month comparative study and international living program focused on sustainable development.
She traveled with professors and 30 fellow students to eight countries in Europe, Asia, the South Pacific, and Latin America.
During the course of the fellowship, Ms. Webb hopes to strengthen her technical and working understanding of communications management systems for community outreach and government initiatives.
Upon completion of the program, she plans to continue studying effective practices in philanthropy and serve as a communications director and consultant for domestic and international foundations focused on equity in education.
