‘For early Antarctic adventurers, this place was the Cape Canaveral of the time,' says Nigel Watson, head of the Antarctic Heritage Trust, as we talk later that day at the International Antarctic Centre, the base from which American, Italian and New Zealand scientists fly to their various bases in the Antarctic on sturdy Hercules LC-130s.

After decades of the elements taking their toll on the artefacts, Watson and his team at the Antarctic Heritage Trust now have $7m of the $9m needed in funding to preserve not only Shackleton's hut but those of Scott and the lesser-known Norwegian explorer Carsten Borchgrevink.

Nigel Watson, the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust director, said Friday the New Zealand government supported any efforts to preserve the site and hoped the listing would attract donors.

He said the estimated cost of conserving the site was $6.7 million.

"The U.S is in the grip of something of a ,Shackelton-mania' right now" says Antarctic Heritage Trust Director, Nigel Watson.Giant-screen film-makers, IMAX, have just released a film about Shackelton's Trans-Antarctic expedition during which the expedition ship, the Endurance, became frozen and crushed in pack ice necessitating a daring open boat trip through some of the most treacherous seas on the planet.Another team are currently recreating that journey for a documentary."The Endurance expedition is sometimes called the greatest story ever told" says Watson.

"It's more a precautionary step rather than anything else," said Nigel Watson, executive director of the Antarctic Heritage Trust, a New Zealand organization that oversees the care of the huts.

In the middle of the freezing dark of the Antarctic winter, the limited number of people living on Scott and McMurdo would not visit the huts anyway. And even so, the 2,000 or so who visit the huts each summer are unlikely to be at risk.

Entering the huts requires a careful cleaning of boots and clothing, and visitors are prohibited from touching any artifacts inside the huts."There's been tens of thousands of people through, over the last six decades. There have been no confirmed reports of anthrax," Watson said.
    ...
"If (the presence of anthrax) is confirmed, we will sit down with Antarctica New Zealand and other stakeholders to ensure that procedures for visits to the huts are developed in a way that accounts for this," Watson said.

Trust executive director Nigel Watson said there was no evidence or medical record of any men on Scott's Antarctic expeditions suffering from anthrax.

"Thousands of people have passed through the historic huts since they were rediscovered in the late 1940s without any cases of confirmed anthrax," he said.

Among recent visitors to the hut was Britain's Princess Anne, chairwoman of the British Antarctic Heritage Trust, who in February launched a campaign to raise $16 million to restore the Scott hut and others on the frozen continent.

    ...
Anthrax was endemic in Asia at the time, Watson said.
