Atlanta, GA. - July 9, 2003 - AtheroGenics, Inc. (Nasdaq: AGIX), a pharmaceutical company focused on the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, today announced that Martin A. Wasserman, Ph.D. has been promoted to Senior Vice President of Discovery Research.In this role, Dr. Wasserman will oversee all aspects of research, including medicinal chemistry, biology and pharmacology.Dr. Wasserman also serves as the Company's Chief Scientific Officer and he will continue to report to Russell M. Medford, M.D., Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer.

Dr. Wasserman joined AtheroGenics in 2001 as Vice President of Discovery Research and Chief Scientific Officer.Prior to joining AtheroGenics, Dr. Wasserman's pharmaceutical experience spanned three decades.While at Aventis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. he served as Vice President and Senior Distinguished Scientist in the Respiratory and Rheumatoid Arthritis Disease Group.He also served as Director, Pulmonary Research, Department of Inflammation and Autoimmune Diseases at Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc.Prior to joining Hoffman-LaRoche, Dr. Wasserman served as Group Director, Department of Pharmacology at SmithKline Beecham Corporation.
Dr. Wasserman has a B.S. degree in Pharmacy from Rutgers University College of Pharmacy in New Jersey, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, where he was also honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1986.
