The nation's oldest shopping center, Highland Park Village was sold in May 2009 for about $170 million to Ray and Heather Washburne and Stephen and Elisa Summers.
...
Ray Washburne is a founder of MCrowd Restaurant Group, which has a Mi Cocina eatery in Highland Park Village.
He says he overheard in Mi Cocina that the shopping center might be sold, and promptly shared the news with his wife and brother- and sister-in-law.
They quickly decided to make a play for it.
"It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Washburne said.
...
Miller said his family felt comfortable because of their high regard for the Hill family and the fact that Washburne's Mi Cocina had been a 17-year tenant in the center.
...
Ray Washburne said he and his partners know the shopping center and its clientele well.
All four partners grew up in the neighborhood and graduated from Highland Park High School, allowing them to apply the lessons of their lifetimes to their business strategies at the center, he said.
"We want to maintain the unique chemistry and balance that has made the Village what it is," Washburne said.
