Standing 6-foot-6, Mike Washburn has cast an imposing figure in the halls of Dumas High School for the past six years. On the football field, Washburn has commanded the respect of every offensive lineman to play for the Demon football team since 1997.And now, Washburn is the new head football coach of those Demons. The Dumas Independent School District Board of Trustees voted Monday night to split the head football coach and athletic director into two separate positions. The vote paved the way for Washburn to take over as head football coach.

Washburn is also the new assistant AD."Coach Washburn was the unanimous choice of the selection committee, and he brings to the program a commitment to excellence," said DISD Superintendent, Larry Appel.

Washburn came to Dumas from Dallas Jesuit, where as head coach he led that team to the 1995 TCIL (Texas Christian Independent League) State Championship. He was TCIL Coach of the Year in 1995 and took that team to the TCIL State Championship game again in 1996.A native of Amarillo who played his high school ball at Tascosa, Washburn already has a knowledge of the Panhandle that the school district was looking for in a new head coach. The selection committee had a field of five candidates, one withdrew and two were rejected, leaving Washburn and former Big Lake Reagan County coach Joey McQueen as the finalists.

"I've been here for six years and I know what our possibilities can be," Washburn said."I'm not going to make any false promises. We've got a ways to go.But we've got an excellent administration, we've got great coaches and we've got good kids."Washburn intends to evaluate the entire football program from grade 7 all the way to the high school varsity program. He will make changes, but will leave a lot of things the same. He attributes that to the quality coaches already in the school district. But he will be different."It's not like a guy coming in completely brand new from the outside," Washburn said.
