According to Telstra's national general manager for urban development, Peter Ward, the Smart Community concept is being embraced as developers and consumers realise how central to their lives connectivity has become.
"We recently signed our first Northern Territory project and it's a sign of how important the Internet now is to the way we communicate with the outside world, entertain ourselves, control our living environment, and even work from home," he says.
"It is no longer age or demographic specific, but a fact of life.Quite simply our homes and neighbourhoods now need to reflect this."
Generally, it's the larger developments of 500 homes or more that get access to the Velocity services , fibre to the home, high speed broadband of 10 to 20MB per second (but capable of rising to 100 per second), Pay TV and digital television and telephony , all over one solution. However, Peter says every development is assessed on its merits.
"The Telstra Smart Community is about tailoring communication solutions at a community and home level," he says.
