Tasked with driving first class management excellence throughout member organisations who receive funding, training and advice from YMLAC, Jane Walton, director for learning, access and skills, decided to pilot online learning with a number of managers through management training provider, Cambridge Online Learning (COL) .
One year later, 16 managers are well on their way to completing their studies. Both Jane and the candidates recognise the benefits of a course that combines online study - giving the flexibility to learn at a time that suits, whilst keeping expenses to a minimum - with Action Learning, which relates assignments to real work life issues.COL's qualifications are designed to develop key leadership capabilities whilst avoiding the feelings of isolation suffered on more conventional online learning courses.
Jane is impressed with the results to date: ‘I have already seen more and more cross team working and understanding as well as increased networking outside of the sector.'
WIDENING SUPPORT NETWORKS TO SOLVE WORKPLACE PROBLEMS
...
This sense of achievement and renewed confidence in management skills has also been witnessed by Jane:
‘I've seen enhanced confidence and an increased ability to talk at management level which has not only benefited the organisations in question but has also developed network opportunities outside of the sector.'
KEEPING LEARNING EFFICIENT AND COST EFFECTIVE
One of the main attractions of the COL package for Jane Walton was its costeffectiveness.

For Jane, the impact of the course to date is obvious.Increased confidence with the ability to work and advise across teams is shining through in her COL candidates. She now looks forward to the day when other managers from across the YMLAC's member organisations take up this form of learning and begin to feel the benefits of professional management development.
