I recently received an email from the sister of John Walters III.John, a veteran member of the FDNY who is assigned to Rescue 1 in Manhattan, was critically injured when a taxi cab slammed into the rear of Rescue 1 on the Upper West side on July 19th (Daily News Story).John became pinned between the wagon and taxicab and suffered compound fractures to both of his legs. His sister Pam informed me that they were later forced to amputate his right leg above the knee and his left leg is still severely damaged. After two months of surgery and rehab John was able to return to his home in Port Washington, NY this past week. Before he was able to do so, members of both the FDNY (Rescue 1) and his local volunteer house (Port Washington Volunteer Fire Department) teamed up to transform his home into a wheelchair accessible environment. Now John and his family need our help!Pam, a resident of Baltimore, has informed me that John has found strength in wearing t-shirts of different fire companies while in rehab.
