Tuscumbia board welcomes Walters

TUSCUMBIA -- Wednesday was signing day for the school district's new superintendent, Joe Walters.
Walters, the director of instruction for Hartselle City Schools, will assume his new position July 1.He replaces Royce Massey, who is retiring at the end of June.
During a called meeting of the school board Wednesday, Walters signed the three-year contract.His salary will be $112,000 annually, which includes this year's statewide seven percent teacher raise.
Walters said he is looking forward to becoming a part of Tuscumbia.
"By the time school starts (Aug. 9), I want to have established a presence in the community," he said."This is a good community with good folk, and I'm really looking forward to serving the community through this board."
Board member Steve Carpenter told Walters he'll be an asset to the school district.
