Some of his peace poems will be sung by Syracuse jazz singers Marcia Rutledge, Connie Walters and Kate Woodle; others will be read to the accompaniment of drummers in a peace circle; still others will be set to music by Society for New Music composers.

"Teachers are under a lot of pressure to teach literacy," says Connie Walters, a musician and teaching artist whose work with PAE includes training teachers.Walters says the correlation between arts and academic success is not only a matter of opinion, but a statistical fact."There are many studies that directly relate math to music.When performing or writing music, all kinds of connections get made in the brain," she says."Music covers so many aspects of what it means to be a human."

Walters says one of the greatest things about the art$TART program is that it lets students interact with practicing artists."When you think of artists, you think either that they're dead or that they're inaccessible.This shows them that there are artists living in their community and that it's a viable lifestyle."

The program also allows children with an artistic bent to thrive.

Connie's job is to make it easy, pleasurable, and (especially) productive for the arts-in-ed community to use Partners as a resource.She maintains the website, coordinates the statewide newsletter, CNY postcard and other mailings, and writes press releases.Her work at PAE combines her experience in music, communications, teaching and training with expanding skills in technology.She has a BA in Fine Arts and an MS in Music Education from Syracuse University, sits on the Education Committee for Syracuse Opera, and currently performs with Adanfo African Drum and Dance Ensemble and SU Oratorio Society.
