DR. LOUIE W. WALTER
Dr. Louie William Walter, age 81, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2002.
Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, he graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1943, and received a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Texas in 1964.At the University of Arkansas he spent four years in ROTC before entering military service in March 1943.
He was a graduate of the following schools: Signal Corps OCS, Fort Monmouth, NJ, US Army Chaplain School-Basic and Advanced Classes; US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Industrial College of the Armed Forces.His military career included a tour of duty in Germany, a tour in France, and 3 tours in Korea.
During his last tour of duty, he served as the 8th Army Staff Chaplain in Seoul, Korea, receiving the Legion of Merit with First Oak Leaf Cluster.He retired from the Army August 31, 1974, at the grade of Colonel after 31 years of service.
Following military retirement, he joined the faculty of Pan American University in Brownsville as a Professor of Business Administration and became Chairman of the Department the next year.He retired from Pan American in August 1988 and received Professor Emeritus in 1989.
He served as a SCORE counselor and on the Boards of the Valley Zoological Society, the Gladys Porter Zoo, the Camille Lightner Playhouse, the Brownsville Historical Association, and was Chairman of the Board of the Palmer Drug Abuse Program.
He was a member of the Ministerial Alliance and a devoted member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Brownsville.Membership in the Kiwanis International began in Fayetteville, AR in 1955, and continued with the Kiwanis Clubs of Killeen and Brownsville, TX.
While in Brownsville, he served as Lt.Governor of Division 11, Texas-Oklahoma District, Kiwanis International for the Administrative year 1984-85, recognized as Distinguished Lt.Governor.After moving to San Antonio to the Army Residence Community (ARC) in June 1988, he continued Kiwanis membership in the ARC Golden K Club and served as Lt.Governor of Division 5, Texas-Oklahoma District.
He has been married to Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Heath Walter since February 1944.He is survived by his wife of 58 years and children William Heath Walter of Baton Rouge, LA, and Karen Louise Walter DePaul of Ashland, MS.
A memorial service was held in the chapel at the ARC on Wednesday.
Graveside service, Friday, February 8, 10:45 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with Military Honors.
