We get lots of calls about gifts of real estate, but they only work in the best of circumstances, says Lee Walsh, gift planning director at William & Mary.In fact, Walsh says the college might have had to decline the Kauffmans' gift but for an additional one : two charitable remainder trusts, funded with appreciated stock worth $ 2 million at the time it was donated.The trusts are now worth more than double that.The trusts pay income to the Kauffmans while they are living, with the principal going after their death to the college as an endowment to maintain the property.The couple also plans to make a $ 20 million bequest to support the institute's work.

Lee was born and raised in the Tidewater, Virginia, area.He is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and holds B.A. (1975) and M.Ed. (1990) degrees from William and Mary.He is also a graduate of the College for Financial Planning in Denver, Colorado.Lee joined the College's Development staff in 1985, serving as Director of Capital Support during William and Mary's $150 million campaign which culminated in 1993.Prior to coming to the College, Lee held development positions with Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia, and with the American Cancer Society in Richmond, Virginia.
