"The church where we stayed is only six blocks off the sea wall, and it encountered $82,000 in damage," Wallace said.

The group, riding in a church van, was flagged down at one Pascagoula intersection by a town resident, who "said he was very thankful that we were there," Wallace said."People knew who we were and what we were doing."

The pastor of the church that brought them to the area told Wallace that he expected that there would be plenty of work needed in the area for at least the next five years.

That position winds up Aug. 31, freeing Wallace for her new role at Wichita Christian, where her husband, Don, is also employed.

"We always seem to be coming home to that congregation," Wallace said.

Wichita Christian will continue its fundraising and expansion plans that former superintendent Jim Bell put in place, Wallace said.

The school is a particularly good option for military families, Wallace said, since their sometimes-brief assignments to this town put enormous pressure on their children to pass the public school's state assessment, the TAKS test, to be promoted.

"We are fully accredited and do Stanford testing.We feel like that's a better option, especially for the military community that may have a one- to three-year assignment here," she said.
