Grade 12 student Geoff Walker (centre) was presented the Hec Gervais Scholarship by Stan Gervais (left) and bonspiel sponsor, Kevin Martin, at the Kevin Martin Junior Bonspiel held last month in Edmonton.
Scholarship winnerCongratulations to Geoff Walker, the 2004 recipient of the Hec Gervais Academic & Curling Scholarship.Geoff was presented the award at the Kevin Martin Junior Bonspiel, held Easter weekend in Edmonton.The award recognizes Geoff's involvement in the sport of competitive curling, as well as his sportsmanship and his community leadership, the values that Hec Gervais strongly believed in.Geoff started curling with the Beaverlodge Curling Club's junior curling program in grade 5.Since then, he has honed his skills in Mixed and Mens' leagues in Beaverlodge, and in the Super leagues in Sexsmith and Grande Prairie. His team won the gold ulu at the Arctic Winter Games in Iqaluit, Nunvut in 2002, and brought home the silver ulu at the Arctic Games in Fort McMurray in 2004.He was part of the Alberta Juvenile Curling Championship team for two successive years (2002 and 2003).In addition, his team finished fourth at Western Canadians-an international event held in Vancouver- in 2002, then returned the next year to capture the bronze medal. This year, Geoff's team was the runner-up at the Alberta Junior Curling Championships in Calgary.Geoff will put the $1000 scholarship to good use as he begins studies in Business Administration at Grande Prairie Regional College in September, and continues his competitive curling career.
