Nearly a dozen country clubs around the state have shut down in the past three years, said Mike Waldron, executive director of the Georgia State Golf Association, which has 350 member clubs.

Some of those owners sold out to developers a few years ago under a much different economy, but the recession certainly has been a factor in recent closures, Waldron said.

"It's just a hard time in all parts of the economy. I don't know if this is necessarily specific to golf," he said.

Georgia State Golf Association Executive Director Mike Waldron said Weaver's victories in the Georgia PGA and Open "probably gives him as good a record in the state professional competitions as anybody."
    ...
"Three of the most important things in his life are his faith, his family and his desire to help golfers with their game," Waldron said.
    ...
"He's had a number of people he has been able to influence as a teacher during his time as a club professional," said Waldron."He was on the Georgia PGA boards while he was a club professional. He was the section's player of the year a couple of times. The recognition for his career is all of that."

After interviewing Waldron, he asked if he could tell one more story about his friend - "a genuine guy."At the 1990 US Senior Open, Waldron served as a rules official. The championship was played at the Riviera Country Club, and the pre-tourney talk revolved around the toughness of the course. The rough was thick and it was playing long. The competitors, "before and during the tournament", were "picking at the USGA" for its layout.

Waldron ran into Weaver while eating breakfast on the tournament's opening day.
    ...
There might be someone to shoot 100, but it's the kind of tournament I love,'" Waldron remembers.

Golf in Georgia is roughly a $3.3 billion industry, according to a 2003 economic impact study by Georgia State University, "and we haven't gotten any smaller since the study was done," said Mike Waldron, golf association executive director. "A lot of people are employed in golf. It's not just green space out there looking nice."

But Waldron is looking at 2009 with some apprehension when it comes to the industry, anticipating declining business and memberships.
