Martin Wainwright, a University of Akron professor and father with children in the Akron schools, spoke at a recent board meeting against a cell phone ban.He cited both convenience and safety concerns.
Waiting after school
Wainwright said he decided his daughter, Elizabeth, a sixth-grader at Litchfield Middle School, needed a cell phone following several situations in which she was left waiting after school, without a way to contact her family. He said the school doesn't have a pay phone, and the office phones aren't accessible to students after school lets out.
In one case, he said, Elizabeth, 11, sat in the rain outside the school for over an hour.
Elizabeth got a cell phone for Christmas, which she has been using to coordinate pickup and drop-off times with her family.
Both she and her father think allowing students to have phones -- but not use them during school -- would be the best choice for the district.
"I think if a student's cell phone rings in class, it should be taken away for a while," Elizabeth said."I think you should at least be able to have it for after school and before school."
Wainwright said he thinks a complete ban would be "a threat to safety."
"I think parents have the right to know where their children are after school," he said.
