On the other hand, as Dave Vorland, executive assistant to UND's president, pointed out, "Within the Las Vegas environment-- parties and lights flashing and everyone having a good time--it would be easier to show bad judgment."Easy, indeed. At the time of the gym's naming, the state was looking into allegations that the hotelier discriminated against women and Jews.

"The thing that has been amazing to me is that the powwow and the Writers Conference are the two longest serving, continually offered events on this campus," said Dave Vorland, director of UND's University Relations division."Not too many things on this campus that have to be organized are that old."

Vorland said Time-Out Wacipi Week and its colorful powwow tradition grew out of a time in the campus history when the number of American Indian programs were growing, and, more important, so were the number of American Indian students.

The Writers Conference also came about against a backdrop of change and at a time when students were re-examining their roles on college campuses.

"That was just a big idea that worked," Vorland said.

Though there was no get-out-the-vote campaign, Dave Vorland, an assistant to the university president, saw other reasons.

"There was not sufficient time to provide an information base for students, so they could see the connection between this vote and their own interests," he said at the time. And, he said, "There was a pretty effective intimidation of students that took place, particularly on radio."

Apparently, some callers on radio talk shows had claimed many UND students weren't eligible to vote because they couldn't be considered residents.

"(The students) passed instead of getting into some undefined trouble," Vorland said.

HIGHER EDUCATION NOTEBOOK: Vorland to step down as UND's PR chief
    ...
When former UND President Kendall Baker left, his right-hand man, Dave Vorland, contemplated exiting, too, and taking early retirement.
    ...
Vorland, 62, was Baker's senior associate. But, in 1999, the incoming leader, Charles Kupchella, asked Vorland to stick around awhile as director of the University Relations division, which Vorland previously had led from 1974 to 1993.
    ...
Vorland did stick it out - another five years - and now he's finally ready to enter semi retirement. His last day at UND will be Sept. 30.

"I'm going to hopefully stay active professionally, but on a part-time basis," Vorland said."I plan on staying in Grand Forks for the time being."

Vorland started working for UND in 1968, before leaving briefly, and then returning in 1973 to serve in University Relations, the main public relations arm of the school.

UND will restructure University Relations, replacing Vorland with someone with broader authority over school marketing. The position's name will change, too, to executive associate vice president to better reflect the new authority.

"My replacement will be more clearly a member of the president's staff," Vorland said.
