St. Mary's University has been awarded a $7.8 million bequest from the estate of Pedro and Alicia Viyao in support of scholarships to the Marianist university.

Viyao was a boarding student at St. Mary's high school department from 1929 to 1932. After high school, he earned his bachelor's degree from the Instituto Franco Ingles in Mexico City in 1936 and a law degree from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico in 1942.
He went on to a distinguishing career in the legal, insurance and hotel management professions in Mexico until his death in 1992.
He and his wife established the Viyao Scholarship Fund in 1983 to encourage Hispanic heritage students to attend St. Mary's.
