Ivette Visbal, who helped found New Vista High School and taught Spanish there since the school opened 12 years ago, didn't want her teaching to become stagnant.

So she applied to the Fulbright teacher-exchange program and will spend the first semester of the coming school year teaching in Mexico.

Visbal is one of two local teachers - and eight in Colorado - participating in the exchange program this year.

Visbal, who also is an adjunct professor at the University of Denver and Regis University, will teach for a semester at a university in Colima, Mexico.

Visbal plans to make the 30-hour drive there next month and is still looking for a place to live.

While there, she will teach English classes and a class on the theory of teaching language.The professor whose classes she is teaching, Guillermo Duran, will take over New Vista's Spanish classes.

Visbal said she initially was a little worried that teaching in a Latin American country would be too similar to her experiences in her native Colombia, but she decided Mexico is different enough to offer a unique learning experience.

"I have never taught at a university in a Latin American country," she said.
