So when retired Episcopal priest Dick Virtue was honored for his decades of helping thousands of alcoholics, he stated his own anniversary.
"I have 36 years and 33 days of sobriety," he said while accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oklahoma Citizen Advocates for Recovery and Treatment Association.
Virtue, who fought his own battle with alcoholism, founded in the early 1970s the Norman Alcohol Information Center, an outpatient counseling service that has treated more than 8,000 people.
The organization was the first agency in Oklahoma to offer treatment of alcoholism as a disease, a major breakthrough in the treatment of addiction.
Virtue wanted to guide others through their battle with the disease, and though he retired several years ago, he continues to inspire.
