Janis Viren is the director of EquipNepal, a Christian ministry that serves the people of Nepal. We met Janis years ago when NewLife raised matching funds to complete the building of an orphanage in Birganj. She is a very dedicated and special person, but her frequent travels will soon be sidelined.

Janis has had kidney disease for 34 years and now she must have a transplant. The donor will be her sister, and the procedure will take place this weekend. While the outcome looks good, Janis will require a lengthy recuperative period.Although EquipNepal will continue to function, she will be missed. Please pray for Janis' speedy and complete recovery.

They also run a Christian school," Viren said. (Pictured: Janis Viren with some of the children EquipNepal sponsors in Nepal and India.Courtesy: EquipNepal website).

"For the past several months, they have been threatened with prison because they run a Christian school and because they teach the children at the children's home about Jesus," she said.

Viren told ANS that a disgruntled teacher at the school was the initial impetus for the problem, but it eventually escalated into several newspaper articles asking for them to be imprisoned.

After several meetings with some of the Hindu authorities, they were to meet again at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday (April 27).

When Viren called the home on the morning of April 27 (it would be Wednesday evening there), the oldest boy was distraught and told her that Babu and Sabitri were put in prison. He doesn't know how many days they will be held -- it could be days or even years, she said.

"Our ministry, EquipNepal, runs the child sponsorship program for these children and we also take care of all the funding that comes from outside of Nepal," she explained.

Viren said she wrote to ANS because she "knows the people who receive your news list have strong faith in Christ and that they would join in prayer for Babu and Sabitri to be released, and for the children to have peace and feel safe during this hard time."

Viren asks that we pray for the couple, and also for the 77 children who are very worried about their auntie and uncle -- especially their two boys and an infant who only knows them as her parents.

On March 1st I wrote about the impending kidney transplant of Janis Viren, Director of EquipNepal.Today, I am pleased and grateful to report that the transplant went very well.Janis is expected to go home from the hospital this weekend, and she is feeling very good indeed.

As I read the e-mails from Janis about her recovery, I have a new appreciation of how a life with limitations can be.Although still sore, Janis is able to enjoy so many things, like ice cream, that she could not before . Her rosy skin color has returned, and she is full of praise for the Lord. From all of us here - thanks to the Lord, thanks for your prayers, and a special thanks to the Mayo Clinic.

According to Janis Viren, president of EquipNepal, an American charity that provides financial support to the orphanage, the former employee had tried to extort money from the Vargheses. When that failed, he gave the photo to police and made accusations that were printed in a local newspaper.

The Vargheses established the Blessed Children's Home for orphans in the southern city of Birganj in 1995.Nearly 80 orphans now live at the home, according to Viren.
