Working, living and learning at McMurdo Station, Antarctica -- 834 nautical miles north of the South Pole -- Tom Vinson gives new meaning to distance learning.
Tom Vinson studying -- and workingVinson, a hazardous waste management and wilderness rescue specialist, works for Raytheon Polar Services Company, which provides services to the National Science Foundation.He is also a student in the University of Denver's Master of Environmental Policy and Management program online.Raytheon offers tuition reimbursement; Vinson's degree will cost about $17,400.
Vinson talked about remote learning on the eve of the season's final sunset; at McMurdo, winter means 24 hours of darkness each day.Vinson and his team won't see another sunrise until August 19.

Tom Vinson: Growing up in Seattle, I've always been into the outdoors.I was out of college, building trails in the woods, being a bum.My mother heard about the cleanup of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and saw a future for me in hazardous waste management.She was right.
