Speaker: Prof. Jyoti Verma, Ph.D. is a professor of Psychology at Patna University, Patna, India.Besides teaching Graduate and Post Graduate students of Psychology, she has also taught in professional MBA and Applied and Clinical Psychology courses at Patna University and has been visiting faculty in summer programs of a number of nationalised banks.Her research areas include cultural values, cross-cultural psychology, behaviour in organisations, Indian traditional thought and community development.She has published extensively on these topics (about 40 research publications) and has presented her research findings in international seminars, workshops and conferences.She has received Gold Medals from Banaras Hindu University and Patna University and was selected for the US Government Post-doctoral Fullbright Fellowship.Prof. Verma was recently a Visiting Professor at Maison des Sciences de l'Homme, where she conducted a study among Indian immigrants in Paris, France.
Abstract: Building on cross-cultural studies of acculturation, semi-structured interviews were conducted with Indian immigrants in Paris.The lecture will discuss preliminary findings about Indian immigrant experiences of cultural differences, social distance and discrimination, and about the processes of psychological and socio-cultural adaptation to the French host society.Selected references:Verma, J. & Triandis, H.
