Dr. Verma has worked extensively on Lipid Biochemistry and Applications of Liposome Technology in healthcare, including diagnostic assay and as carrier of drugs and vaccines.He has pioneered applications of Liposome Technology in the industry in India, and developed and commercialized the first Liposomal product of India, Liposome agglutination test for detection of Anti-cardiolipin antibodies in serum as a test for syphilis.In May 2003, FUNGISOMEÔ was launched - one of the two Liposomal Amphotericin B formulations in the world.Presently, he is engaged in the development of a number of controlled release pharmaceuticals employing an array of novel drug delivery systems which are at various stages of development.

The company's managing director, Dr J N Verma, said LIPL would start full-fledged operations within two years, though "we will be in a position to start initial activities after three months".

About the sky-high cost of treatment at present - Rs 5,900 per day - Verma said LIPL is evaluating ways to bring down the cost so that the economically deprived section can avail it eventually.

According to Verma, LIPL now plans to diversify into diagnostics and vaccines for human, veterinary and poultry healthcare.

According to Dr J N Verma, Life Care Innovations, "Fungisome removes toxicity and also prevents any interaction with human cells as well as raises the specificity to target fungal cells, thus making it the safest formulation proven internationally".The drug matches with the best of the imported options in terms of therapeutic efficacy and the treatment costs as little as, one tenth of the imported option, he said.

Dr. Jitendra N. Verma, Managing Director oversees the day-to-day management of the company. Dr. Verma possesses a Masters degree from Allahabad University and is a Ph.D. from PGIMER Chandigarh. He pursued his research interests specializing in Lipid Biochemistry and application of Liposome Technology at the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University, Georgetown University, and Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington DC. During his tenure at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), he made significant contribution to the development of Liposomal Malaria Vaccine. Dr. Verma has been involved in the development and commercialization of a number of healthcare products including diagnostics and pharmaceuticals. The team led by Dr Verma has commercialized the first Hepatitis C test in Asia. He has developed and commercialized the first Liposomal product of India - a Liposome Agglutination test of Syphilis. Dr. Verma is a pioneer in the application of Liposome Technology in the Indian pharmaceutical industry. His distinguished leadership has enabled Lifecare Innovations to launch FUNGISOME™ - India's first liposomal drug and for this Lifecare Innovations received Technology Day 2004 National Biotechnology Award.
