Indeed, barely five years have been spent in Alberta. While I hope my efforts within the CA profession when I was living outside Alberta have had some benefit here, it is a mark of a nationally-orientated provincial organization to recognize all those years as a CA in your recognition process.Thank you, again, for the recognition and national leadership.I have decided to remain in Alberta after my time in CASB, and I hope I will continue to be able to contribute to our fine profession for some time to come.

While working for the Institute, Jim had another notable impact on the profession in Alberta, hiring a young man with a similar rural background to his own-a youngster from Ontario named Steve Glover.
    ...
Jim laughs, "When we brought Steve on I had no idea that this bright kid would one day be a 25-year mainstay of the profession in Alberta."
    ...
After a successful career there-he was honoured with a Manitoba FCA in 1990-the lure of Alberta led Jim back to this province, and he accepted the position of vice-president student services and CFO of Keyano College in Fort McMurray. That was followed by a move to Grant MacEwan College as vice-president of operations in 1995 and, ultimately, in 2002, to his current role as president of Grande Prairie Regional College.
    ...
Working in the education sector brings its own unique challenges, and gives Jim an inside view of one of the highest priority areas in Alberta.
    ...
A good example of that is what happened in the early 1990s in Alberta.
    ...
"Alberta is a leader in education, but it is absolutely essential to ensure that continues."
    ...
"It's the ethical framework of the CA qualification process, already well-developed growing up in rural Alberta, that I found most relevant to helping me succeed as an entrepreneur."
    ...
An example of these is our affiliation with Alberta's premier business magazine, Alberta Venture, which has resulted in several high-profile positioning opportunities. Many of you will remember the "Go For the Money CD," a how-to aid on raising capital for start-up businesses which was co-produced with Alberta Venture and made available to the public at large through magazine and web ads.In conjunction with the release of the CD, we were also among the sponsors of a province-wide symposium on Corporate Finance coordinated through Alberta Venture. The symposium helped position CAs front and center of this core business skill.

Another positioning opportunity arising from a public service sponsorship with Alberta Venture was the printed compendium of the full "Managing Matters" series-30 columns on various business matters published in Alberta Venture over three years (2000-2002) and authored by Alberta CAs.
    ...
Finally, we sponsor two important award programs together with Alberta Venture, both of which have brought significant recognition for the profession-the Business Person of the Year, co-sponsored with the Certified Management Accountants of Alberta (CMAs), as well as the Alberta Venture eAwards.
